Why Did the Boy Scouts Face a Lawsuit?

The Boy Scouts of America have faced widespread accusations of child sexual abuse for years, ever since the early 1940s. Numerous individuals have reported being assaulted or molested by organization members, especially by scout leaders.

Over time, lawsuits have piled up against the nonprofit group, bringing the total number of abuse claims to more than 92,700.

The Boy Scouts failed to implement proper background check policies until 2008, allowing many predators to gain access to children in their care. As a result of all this abuse, the organization faced a wave of lawsuits, leading it to file for bankruptcy in 2020.

As a result of this bankruptcy filing, the organization was forced to work out a settlement with plaintiffs in which victims could receive monetary compensation regarding boy scout sexual abuse.

What Was the Result of the Boy Scout Lawsuit?

As part of their chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization process, the Boy Scouts of America secured a $2.46 billion settlement payout plan approved by a bankruptcy court in Wilmington, Delaware.

This plan will allow the organization to settle claims by more than 80,000 men abused as children by troop leaders. Additionally, the settlement included a plan to create safety measures and “protections for current and future generations of Scouts.”

Is It Too Late to File for the Boy Scout Lawsuit?

No, it is not too late to file a lawsuit against the Boy Scouts. If you were a victim of abuse from the organization, you might still be eligible to receive compensation through the settlement.

Thanks to the S.3103 bill, “Eliminating Limits to Justice for Child Sex Abuse Victims Act of 2022,” the previous statute of limitations which said you could no longer sue if more than ten years had passed, no longer applies.

This means you can now pursue a claim against the Boy Scouts of America regardless of age or when the abuse occurred. If you’re ready to proceed with a lawsuit, reach out to an experienced lawyer who can help you get the justice you deserve. All sexual abuse survivors have the opportunity for fair and adequate repayment for their experience.
